SCN coding of Mercedes-Benz involves assigning a special calibration software number to automotive system components. This service is necessary because modern cars have a wide variety of electronic equipment. A stable connection must be established between the various control units, and each new piece of equipment must be compatible with the general parameters of the car.
When is SCN coding necessary?
For Mercedes-Benz cars, SCN coding is performed when new equipment or retrofit systems are installed. The service is also necessary for complex repairs that require the replacement of broken mechanisms with new ones. Simply connecting the system mechanically is not enough for it to work and receive updates — the control unit must be linked to the car’s electronics.
After assigning a calibration software number, the mechanism works stably. If errors occur, information about them is stored in the electronic control units. These errors can be read when scanning during computer diagnostics. This also protects the car from unauthorised replacement of equipment. When new software versions appear, it can be updated.
What does SCN coding mean?
Since 2002, assigning a calibration software number has been mandatory for all control units related to the exhaust system. This obligation is enshrined in law in Europe and the United States. The SCN code consists of 3 parts:
- Coding lines – indicates that the unit is compatible with the machine configuration;
- SCN numbers – consists of 16 characters, corresponds to the software number;
- Check number, which can be used to verify the SCN’s compliance with the coding line.
The first 10 digits correspond to the catalogue number (most often – the control unit software number). The next 2 digits indicate the factory or organisation where the vehicle was coded. The last 4 digits are the number used by the factory to code different versions of the same software catalogue number using continuous numbering.
Stages of SCN coding
It is possible to assign SCN Offline, but this service provides limited capabilities for control unit operation and repair, so it is advisable to perform this procedure Online. If a malfunction occurs, the car is scanned to detect the faulty mechanism. Repair work is carried out and serviceable equipment is installed. Then the technician connects special equipment to communicate with the car manufacturer’s server and performs the coding. To verify the successful connection and check for updates for the control units, a repeat computer diagnosis is performed.
Advantages of our workshop
To properly connect a new system or additional equipment, you need original SCN coding equipment. The necessary equipment with high-quality software is available at our specialised workshop. Our technicians have many years of experience in servicing electronic systems, so the quality of our services meets strict modern requirements.
